The original Meat Boy was a flash game on Newgrounds. Released in late 2008, it gained quite a bit of attention as being a breakout platformer game reminiscent of very difficult NES games from 'back in the day.' It was created by Edmund McMillen and Johnathan McEntee, who went on to create a map pack for it. Later, the two were approached by Nintendo, who wanted to update the game and bring it to WiiWare. McMillen and McEntee were happy to oblige, and so began the creation of Super Meat Boy.
Super Meat Boy to be released in early 2010 but due to development constraints was pushed back until December. There was some contention over which networks the game would be released on, and eventually Team Meat announced that Super Meat Boy would be released on Xbox Live Arcade first due to a contract Team Meat had signed.
Xbox Live Arcade's version of Super Meat Boy went live on October 20, 2010. The XBLA version includes a mode that allows players to play new levels released by Team Meat for free. The mode, called 'Teh Internets', replaces what would on other platformers be a level designer. However, Team Meat have stated that levels made by users on platforms that do have the level designer may later be released on Teh Internets for XBLA players to enjoy.
